Field Trip Ideas
A Trip to the Zoo
When it comes to Spring Breaks some preschoolers miss out. Many preschoolers
don’t get that great Spring Break like older children who are in regular
schools do. Yet they still hear their siblings talking about no school for a
week or Mom and Dad discussing what will occupy their older children’s time
while on Spring Break.
One great idea for a preschool day is to take them to the zoo. With the many
different types of zoo’s these days you are sure to find one that will work
for you and your preschooler’s needs.
Children love animals of any kind. Many preschool age children only get the
chance to see animals in a book, so taking them for a day at the zoo can be
very exciting.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help either. Many of the preschoolers have older
brothers and sisters who are responsible enough to chaperone. Talk to their
parents and see if this is a possibility while they are on Spring Break. Some
parents may be able to help also. Give them enough notice so they can speak
with employers about having a day off to go with you.
Try to keep the type of zoo you visit on the preschooler’s level. If it’s a
large zoo they may feel overwhelmed. Many places have petting zoos. These
types of zoos are small and have animals that the children can actually
interact with.
Taking preschoolers out for some Spring Break fun can help them feel they
aren’t being left out of the fun of older brothers or sisters. Taking them to
the zoo can be a great experience for them and something you can continue to
talk about day after day. It’s educational and exciting for everyone.
Going to a Museum
Preschoolers don’t often get the chance to take advantage of Spring Break. It
can make them feel a little left out especially if they have older brothers
and sisters who are talking about the fun they are gong to have while out of
school. Giving your preschoolers a “Spring Break” day can make them feel a
little special. It can be a great adventure for all of you.
One great place to take preschoolers for an adventure is a museum. There are
many different types of museums, so finding the right one to fit the preschool
age shouldn’t be too difficult to accomplish.
Be sure to ask for some help on this adventure too. Many parents may be able
to take some time off of work to help. Talk to the parents and see if any of
the children have older siblings that are responsible enough to be a
chaperone. This can not only help you, but can also help out parents who are
trying to find things to keep their older kids busy.
Check with all the local museums to find one that is made specifically for
those of preschool age. If that’s not possible call the museum and see what is
available to that your students will enjoy and comprehend. Many museums are
more than willing to help any way they can.
Prepare the children for their little adventure. Talk to them about where they
are going and what they will see. Show them books or pictures of the types of
things they will see at the museum. Also be sure to talk with them about
safety and manners for their trip.
Once the trip is over, take some time to talk about what they saw and what
they learned. Let them tell you about their personal thoughts and experiences.
They may surprise you at some of the things they remember seeing. The
excitement they have over their trip to the museum is sure to stay with them
for awhile so be prepared to hear about it over and over again.
Visit a Park
A really fun outdoor adventure for preschoolers during Spring is a trip to the
park. Spending time outside in a natural environment can be very educational
for small children. Everything they see is a new adventure for them and can be
very exciting.
Find a park that is close to where you are. If it’s close enough you can walk
there. This will give the children a chance to see something that might not be
located in the park itself. Flower gardens and different types of birds that
flock to your area in the Spring are just a couple of things they may not see
while walking through the park.
Try to find a park that’s not full of playground type toys if possible. Kids
can play on these just about anywhere. If they don’t have the toys to distract
them they will find the educational type things you want them to see easier.
Be sure to point out the different types of trees, foliage and animals that
you find. Spend time walking around and watching the birds and other small
animals. Talk to the children about what they see. Get them as involved with
nature as you can. Even the rocks they find can be fun and educational for
them.
Have them collect something different. Maybe a rock or a pine cone, but to a
preschooler these things can be something new and a great chance to learn
something new. When the trip is over, you can help them make something for the
classroom with their finds.
Spending the day at the park can be quite an adventure for a preschooler.
Their interest in learning combined with the excitement in seeing things they
may never have seen before can make for an adventure that is not long
forgotten.
Go On a Picnic
Children love an adventure of just about any kind. Just the idea of doing
something different gets them all excited. A picnic is an exciting adventure
and doesn’t have to be extravagant either.
Ask your student’s parents to help if they can. If you don’t serve lunches to
your preschoolers ask the parents to pack a lunch for a picnic. Have them
include utensils, cups etc. if necessary. Be sure to let the parents know if
you plan to spend awhile at the picnic. This way they can include snacks and
enough drinks to last them the whole trip.
If you provide the food, set it up like a real picnic. Get out the grill to
cook some good ole hot dogs on. Have fruit salad and a cooler full of fruit
drink boxes. Set up a table with a table cloth; make it red and white
checkered for the full effect. Use paper plates and plastic cups. You can even
take a few blankets out and lay them on the ground. Set up a picnic basket and
fill it full of snacks and drinks.
No picnic is complete without a few games. Be sure to include a few toys so
the children can play. Let them frolic around and enjoy their day. Include
some balls and other types of outdoor toys. They will have a great time
playing and it will fuel hunger for their lunch.
You don’t have to go far to have a picnic either. You can do it right their in
the school yard. The kids won’t care. The picnic itself will be the adventure
so you don’t have to go all out on the place. Just go out and enjoy the day.
If it’s raining you can even do a picnic inside. Let the kids lay out blankets
and set up their picnic right in the classroom. It’s still an adventure for
them no matter where they are.
